Miami's Thomas fined for hit (AP)


The NFL has fined Miami linebacker Zach Thomas $7,500 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on New York's Lavernaues Coles last Monday night. The hit, which came in the second quarter of New York's 13-10 win, left Coles with a cut on his chin. Thomas, an 11-year veteran, leads the Dolphins in tackles.

There was laughter in the lobby and joking in the hallways at the Miami Dolphins complex Wednesday. For the first time in months, the team president and even assistant coaches talked to reporters. Coach Nick Saban was gone, leaving the Dolphins to face their third coaching change since 2000. A dark day for the organization?

Dolphins guard James sidelined by surgery (AP)


Miami Dolphins guard Jeno James underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Tuesday, sidelining another starter in an offensive line that has struggled all season. James will be evaluated week to week, the Dolphins said. He's likely to miss their next game, Nov. 5 at Chicago. James started the first seven games at left guard.

Nick Saban entered the Miami Dolphins interview room for his weekly post-mortem Monday, reading glasses in hand. He didn't need to wear them, because at this point he's working without a script. In 12 previous years as a head coach, Saban never had a losing record. But his Dolphins are 1-6 and tied for the worst record in the NFL, and he's taking heat for the dismal start.
